Team building, not cringe: 5 team-building attractions that actually build a team

Team building, not cringe: 5 team-building attractions that actually build a team

Picture a company paintball day. Half the IT department is hiding behind a single tree. The new marketing manager is pretending her marker has jammed. Everyone comes back bruised and even more split into cliques. The only thing that got bonded was a dent in the CEO's car.

That's what forced team building looks like. If you work in HR, at an event agency or run a marketing team, you know this scenario. You want people to get to know each other, break down barriers and work better together. And it ends with eye-rolling, forced smiles and a budget spent on attractions nobody enjoys.

The problem is that for years we've confused team building with competition. We said "have fun", but designed tasks that divided people into winners and losers. Good team building isn't about beating the accounts department. It's about winning together with the accounts department. What counts is working together towards a shared, fun goal.

Below are five types of team-building attractions built on collaboration. The kind where people laugh together, not out of embarrassment.

Team building isn't a competition

The traditional approach, like paintball or go-karting, assumes that adrenaline brings people together. It works, but only for those who enjoy adrenaline and physical competition. For the rest of the team, such as introverts or less physically fit people, it's a source of stress and a feeling of exclusion.

Better team building gives people a sense of safety. It chooses tasks where everyone can contribute. The result depends on communication, ingenuity and teamwork, not strength or speed.

1. A task you can't do on your own

These are attractions designed so that the group has to coordinate as they go. Without that, nothing happens. And the format stays light and stress-free.

What we suggest: Human Joystick. One character on screen, controlled by the whole team, which becomes a human joystick. To make the character turn left, 15 people have to coordinate their body movements. Someone quickly starts counting "three, four!". The rest laugh and cooperate, because there's no other way.

2. Shared laughter that closes the distance

Sometimes the best thing you can give your team is a reason to laugh together. About something other than a PowerPoint slide. Humour helps close the distance and flatten the hierarchy.

What we suggest: game shows based on associations rather than knowledge.

  • Family Feud. It's not about the correct answer, but about guessing what other people said. The team has to confer: "What did people put for an animal beginning with K?". Absurd answers defuse tension better than any speech.

3. A joint creation you can see at the end

People feel a bond when they create something together. A creative task with a visible end result gives the team something to be proud of.

What we suggest:

  • FotoMozaika. Every employee takes a photo that becomes a small tile in a large image, for example the company logo or the event slogan. Everyone sees the individual photos come together into a whole.
  • Art & Wine workshops. Painting over wine is just a pretext. In practice it's two hours during which people talk, joke and go through the creative process together. Instead of sitting stiffly at banquet tables.

A creative contest using whatever's to hand

Simple creative contests also work for a joint creation. For example: "Shoot a one-minute advert for our company using only the props on this table".

4. A game that teaches along the way

Team building can also have a strategic purpose. For example, embedding new company values, product training or bringing teams together after a merger. Instead of a lecture, you can turn it into a game.

What we suggest: a Themed Olympics or personalised event games. We prepare a game show or an app with questions about the new strategy, the company's history or a product. Teams compete in a friendly atmosphere and reinforce the key information along the way. Learning through play, just for grown-ups.

5. Calm team building for those who don't like noise

Not every team-building activity has to be loud and competitive. Sometimes people get to know each other best when they can slow down and talk in a smaller group. Introverts will appreciate this the most.

What we suggest: creative and relaxation workshops.

  • Forest in a Jar workshops. Planting and arranging a small garden in glass is calming. Conversations around the table flow naturally, with no pressure.
  • Scent Workshop. Making soy candles or perfume engages the senses and encourages relaxed conversation.

Start with a problem in the team, not a list of attractions

Team building isn't an agenda item to tick off. Well-designed team building is an HR tool.

When choosing an attraction, don't ask what's trendy. Ask what problem in the team you want to solve. Poor communication? Human Joystick will do the job. A stiff atmosphere? Go for Family Feud. People are stressed? Choose workshops. Want them to feel part of a whole? Book FotoMozaika. Then team building stops being a phrase that makes everyone roll their eyes and starts delivering real results.
